Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV), famous for movies like Satya and Rangeela, is in the limelight again. This time, it is not for his filmmaking. The Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai has sentenced him to three months of imprisonment. The case involves a cheque bounce issue. It stems from a 2018 complaint filed by a firm named Shree, represented by Maheshchandra Mishra. The complaint falls under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The case revolves around the dishonor of a cheque issued by Ram Gopal Varma to Shree, which bounced due to insufficient funds or exceeding the agreed payment amount. The court found him guilty of violating Section 138, which addresses the dishonor of cheques.

In June 2022, the court convicted RGV, but he secured bail by depositing a cash security of Rs. 5,000. However, on January 21, 2025, the filmmaker did not appear in court during the hearing. As a result, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.

The court has also ordered RGV to pay a compensation of Rs. 3.72 lakh to the complainant. Failure to comply with this directive will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.

Ram Gopal Varma’s recent years have been marred by financial difficulties. The director faced severe setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, reportedly selling his office to address mounting debts. Moreover, his recent films have struggled to perform at the box office, adding to his woes.
